Rhythm & Raga

 An evening of Classical music, aptly titled “Rhythm & Raga” was jointly organized by Lok Kala Manch & Message Charitable Trust on the 23rd of September 2014 at the Vasuki Auditorium of Lok Kala Manch in the Lodhi Institutional Area of New Delhi,

The concert started with a solo recital on the Sitar by Shri Azeem Ahamed Alvi, accompanied on the Tabla by Shri Rasheed Niyazi.

This was followed by a Jugalbandhi by Tabla Maestros Mohd. Amjad Khan & Hafiz Khan Alvi; the support on the Sarangi was given by Shri Junaid Khan.

The Musical evening ended with a vocal rendition of Hindustani Classical Music by Shri Farid Hassan Khan. He was accompanied on the Harmonium by Shri Karim Niyazi and on the Tabla by Shri Sabir Hussain.

The Artists

Azeem Ahamed Alvi, son of Ustad Sayed Ahamed Alvi, hails from the Itava Gharana. This talented Sitarist trained under Padmashree Ustad Shahid Parwez Khan and has given many international performances in countries like Japan, Amsterdam, Australia etc.

Rasheed Niyazi belongs to the family of traditional musicians.  Son of renowned harmonium player Ustad Kareem Niyazi, he started under the guidance of Tabla Maestros Ustad Hasmat Ali Khan and Ustad Akram Khan of Ajrara Gharana, Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. He has performed at Sangeet Kalakar, Kal Ke Kalakar, Chintamani festival and Motunga festival In Mumbai as also at the Harballabh festival in Jalandhar, Punjab. He has performed for various televisions channels Like ETV, Prasar Bharti etc. He has also performed with maestro Ustad Shahid Parvez, Adnan Khan and Moinuddin Ahamed.

Mohd Amjad Khan belongs to the famous KIRANA GHARANA. He is the son of Ustad Islamuddin Khan who is the 8th Generation of Kirana Gharana.  Amjad, at the tender age of 10, started his training from the well known Tabla player of AJRARA GHARANA, USTAD AKRAM KHAN. Clarity of Sound is the Hallmark of the Gharana’s playing Style. The Ajrara Gharana style includes Bol-Patterns that are rather complicated with Barabar and Adlaya forming the bulk of Tempo Repertoire. Mohd Amjad Khan is arguably the finest contemporary performer of this style..

Hafiz Khan Alvi was born in the family of great Musician of Delhi Gharana.  He is the son of Ustad Sayyed Ahmed Alvi, a well known Sitar Player. He has been learning Tabla under the guidance of Ustad Akram Khan of Ajrara Gharana. At the age of 16, Hafeez Ahmed Alvi got First Prize in many prestigious competitions like the All India Radio Music Competition, Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelen Music Competition, Lucknow Sangeet Natak Academy Music Competition and many more. He has participated in many festivals in India and abroad as soloist and as an accompanying artist to Ustad Shahid Parvez, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma to name a few.

Junaid Khan is the son of well known Tabla Player Of Ustad Mangtai Khan. Junaid has taken his Sarangi training under grate Maestro and living legend Ustad Asif Ali Khan from Kirana Gharana. Junaid is very talented and superb Sarangi player of the younger generation. He has performed with many of the leading vocalists in the current Generation and has also given many solo performances in India.

Farid Hassan Niyazi Is a great classical singer who was guided by his Guru Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan; though a predominantly a Indian classical singer, Farid is equally at home with Western classical style and also other forms of songs. He has performed in most of the leading musical festivals in India and Abroad.

Karim Niyazi belonging to the Great Music family of ‘’KIRANA GHARANA’’ is the son of late FAYYAZ AHMED KHAN. He is grandson of USTAD ABDUL KAREEM KHAN. KAREEM NIYAZI started under the tutelage of his elder brother USTAD MAHOOD KHAN & his Uncle BADE BABU KHAN    Later he trained under the guidance of his uncle and great maestro of classical music, PADMASGREE USTAD FAYYAZ AHMED KHAN & NIYAZ AHMED KHAN. He has affection towards semi classical & classical music. He is very good in classical Ghazal Geet, Filmy Songs etc. KAREEM NIYAZI has given  many National & International Stage Performances  in U.S.A., Sri Lanka etc.

Sabir Hussain hails from a very rich family background of Indian Classical Music. Born in 1986 in Delhi he started learning Tabla at the age of five, He is a disciple of the famous Tabla player of India - Ustad Rafiuddin Sabri. He has been performing since his early age in various parts of India and also has also won many prizes in the different musical competitions held in India. He has also performed as an accompanying artist with Bishwajit Ray Choudhury, Pundit Somnath Mardurkar and Mohtram Sabri.
